Our Story
A Steady Hand in Uncertain Territory
Thornmark was established to fill a specific gap — practical, calm education on consumer-financial awareness for Malaysian households who want to think more clearly before acting.

Thornmark: Background and Mission
Thornmark came out of a straightforward observation: many Malaysian households are aware that financial misuse exists — telephone schemes, message-based deceptions, pressure tactics — but they don't have a structured way to talk about it as a family. The topic sits between concern and confusion, and most people reach for information only after something has already gone wrong.
We started from Brickfields, Kuala Lumpur, close to communities with a wide range of household structures — multigenerational families, young adults supporting older parents, retirees navigating a more complex financial environment than they prepared for. That context shaped how we built our programmes: small groups, honest language, printed materials that stay in the house, and a consistent message that the appropriate first call is always to a recognised authority like BNMLINK or PDRM.
Our programmes are educational, not advisory. We do not offer case guidance, legal interpretation, or investment opinions. What we offer is familiarity with the landscape — what patterns look like at a general level, what questions are worth asking, and who the right people to contact are when something feels off.

Our Principles
Factual, Not Sensational
We work from publicly available reports and official advisories. Content is selected for accuracy, not to provoke alarm.
Household-Centred
Awareness is more durable when it's shared. Programmes are designed to travel home with participants — through conversation decks, workbooks, and reference materials.
Always Point to Official Channels
Every programme ends with a clear list of who to contact when something feels wrong — BNMLINK, PDRM, and relevant public bodies.
Questions Over Conclusions
We don't tell participants what to think. We help them develop the habit of asking the right questions before acting — a small shift with significant practical value.
Strictly Educational
Thornmark does not provide individual advice, case assessments, or legal or financial opinions. This boundary is maintained in every programme, every session.
Long-Term Thinking
Consumer financial awareness is an ongoing conversation, not a one-time fix. Our cohort model reflects that — building habits across weeks, not hours.

Programme Standards
Source Verification
All pattern categories are reviewed against current publicly available Bank Negara and PDRM advisories before each cohort intake.
Privacy Protection
Participant information is held only for administration purposes and is not shared with third parties. See our Privacy Policy for detail.
Small Group Sizes
Sessions are capped to allow meaningful discussion. Participation is active, not passive — questions are expected and welcomed.
Printed Materials Standard
All reference cards, workbooks, and readers are reviewed annually and reprinted when official guidance is updated.
No Advisory Boundary
Facilitators are trained to redirect individual case questions to the appropriate authorities. This boundary is communicated clearly at the start of every session.
Participant Feedback Loop
Every cohort ends with a structured feedback form. Results inform the next revision of session content and printed materials.
— our context
Consumer Financial Awareness in Malaysia — A Practical Perspective
Malaysia has a well-developed regulatory framework for consumer financial protection, with bodies including Bank Negara Malaysia, the Securities Commission, and PDRM's Commercial Crime Investigation Department actively publishing public advisories. The challenge households face is not the absence of information — it's the absence of a reliable habit of engaging with that information before a situation arises.
Public reports from BNMLINK consistently show that telephone-based approaches, message-based contact, and pressure tactics remain among the most frequently reported consumer concerns. These are not new patterns. What changes is the specifics of how they are presented — the language used, the channels chosen, and the urgency framing applied. Familiarity with the general shape of these patterns is a practical and transferable skill.
Thornmark's approach draws on this public record. Rather than presenting financial awareness as a specialist subject, we treat it as a household conversation skill — something that benefits from regular, low-stakes practice rather than a single high-stakes intervention. The Family Awareness Cohort, in particular, was designed with this in mind: ten weeks of weekly sessions, a peer group that builds its own familiarity, and printed materials that stay in the home long after the cohort ends.
We are based in Brickfields, Kuala Lumpur, and welcome enquiries from individuals, families, HR teams, and community organisations looking to add a structured awareness component to what they already offer their members.
